The School of Science was established in 1960 at Waishuanshi Campus with the
Department of Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. Later, the Departments of Microbiology
and Psychology were added. The School has master's degree programs in Microbiology,
Mathematics, and Chemistry. Our educational and academic focuses are:
- Theory and practice are both emphasized. Experiments and practice are conducted
in-groups and sections.
- To enhance teaching quality, we rely on multi-media and computer-assisted programs.
- General knowledge and common courses are required of science majors.
- We maintain good relationship with some clinical and consulting institutions where
students can be offered their opportunity of internship.
- We advocate experiment safety and promote the consciousness of environmental protection.
- We involve ourselves in research projects sponsored by the national Science Council, the
Agricultural Committee, the Department of Health, as well as some local manufactures.
Each department is encouraged to cooperate with their worldwide counterparts in
academic research.
DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS

The Department of Mathematics was established in 1969. The master's degree program was
set up in 1992 and the math education program started in 1996. Its curriculum falls into
three major categories: "Analysis", "Algebra", and
"Geometry". Applied courses like statistics and computing math are also
included. The master's program offers such research-oriented courses as probability
theory, numerical math, bio-math, etc. Education credit courses are offered to prospective
high school math teachers. Assistance for learning difficulties is always available; among
students, exchange of experience is encouraged; workshops or seminars are constantly held
by the Department of enhance teaching as well as learning.
DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS

The Department of Physics was
established in 1960 with an aim to develop student's knowledge about as well as interest
in the study of physics. Our curriculum falls into four parts: core courses, feature
courses, electives, and recommended courses. From students' sophomore year on, they are
deeply involved in individual teacher's research projects such as bio-medical physics,
electro-optics (including Raman Spectrum, liquid crystal, ultra-sonic and laser physics),
and theoretical physics. Students have access to facilities like seminar rooms, library,
video and computer labs. Moonlight Garden is held regularly, in which students discuss a
variety of topics with faculty. President Yuan-tsun Liu, a member of our faculty,
discusses physics problems with students every Friday lunchtime and takes them on field
tours. We maintain constant contact with our alumni and they offer scholarships to high
achievers in our department.
DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
Tel:886-2-28819471 ext. 6781, Email:chem@mail.scu.edu.tw
The Department of
Chemistry was established in 1960 and offers a master's degree. Its educational goal is to
cultivate professional chemical knowledge, the consciousness of natural science, and
independent and creative thinking in the minds of the students. In addition to chemistry, the curriculum
includes mathematics, physics, and data searching. Academic research ability and
techniques are emphasized, especially in the graduate program. Advising and counseling are
offered to help students in their studies as well as career planning Students' language
ability and information application ability are developed to ensure the quality of
research in applied science.
DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY
Tel:886-2-28819471 ext. 6831, Email:microbio@mail.scu.edu.tw
 The Department of Microbiology was
established in 1980 to provide students interested in the life sciences with necessary
knowledge in microbiology. We have a master's degree program. Since the undergraduate
curriculum allows minimum required courses, students enjoy great freedom of choice in
terms of their areas of study, such as environment, food and industry microbiology, and
molecular biology, etc. To ensure learning quality, in-group experiments and seminars are
conducted. The graduate curriculum covers all kinds of microbiology and biochemistry, with
the focus on the training of independent research ability. In the years to come, we will
further diversify our curriculum and move even closer to perfection in training our
students.
DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY
Tel:886-2-28819471 ext. 6891, Email:psy@mail.scu.edu.tw
The Department of Psychology in School of Science was established in 1989, with the
purpose of providing academic as well as professional training to students through social
services and practices. The
focuses of our curriculum design are on theories and applied fields. Full time faculty
offers such basic courses as general psychology, psycho and educational statistics,
mathematics, calculus, physiology, experimental design. Full-time and part-time faculty is
responsible for courses in applied psychology, such as counseling, industrial and
commercial psychology, and some specific courses. We have lab and computer facilities that
are conducive to learning. We plan to set up a master's degree program, focusing on
research, to make psychology training complete. |
