Aims of Education
The School of Foreign Languages and Cultures seeks
to enable the students to have a grasp of language skills
and a well-informed understanding of world cultures.
The goal is to develop in the students a broad outlook
through diversified or parallel approaches. In addition,
the School offers courses in foreign languages available
to all students of the University, providing them with
the opportunity to learn languages and have a sound
understanding of foreign cultures. It is hoped that,
in turn, they will be enabled to reflect on their own
culture, establish self-awareness and acquire a perspective
for studying cultures.
Characteristics of Curriculum
and Instruction
The School’s curriculum consists of two kinds of courses,
(a) the courses in languages, cultural backgrounds and
the practice of foreign languages and (b) the so-called
“field courses.” The first kind includes reading, grammar,
conversation, composition, translation (oral and written),
business writing, etc., and the second includes literature
(novel, drama and poetry), linguistics, language teaching,
comparative literature, philosophy, education, and political
science. The courses are designed to bring out lively
classroom response and in-depth study. Small class sizes
ensure individual attention. The primary concern is
to enhance interaction between teacher and student.
Students are trained in reading skills, in developing
the necessary “feeling” regarding particular foreign
languages, in understanding foreign languages with their
cultural background, and in developing the habits of
analysis, deduction and diSUssion and exchange of ideas.
The goal is to foster talents who are broad-minded,
perceptive about cultural phenomena and the relationship
between the humanities and technology in modern society,
and who care about issues concerning people and can
discern the many facets of human existence.
