of Law
Aims of Education
From Shanghai to Taipei, the School of Law has based
its academic work on a time-honored tradition of legal
education. The goal is to produce legal experts who
can respond to the needs and expectations of society.
The graduates will use their skills to serve the public
interest, to make contributions, to ensure having a
law-abiding society, and to promote justice and fairness.
With forward-looking academic planning and strategic
curriculum innovation, the School seeks to train ethical
professionals with a sense of mission to pursue true
justice. To meet the demands of an increasingly complex
social environment, students are trained to exercise
critical thinking and sound judgment when dealing with
legal problems or other social issues.
Characteristics of Curriculum and Instruction
The School gives students five years of instruction
in the field of law, offering them various learning
opportunities and career counseling. Common law and
civil law are incorporated into the curriculum, taught
by a highly qualified faculty. To meet social demands,
the whole curriculum, -- theory, practice and career
planning – are coordinated to provide the students an
ample space to develop their potential and help them
become well-rounded legal professionals. In addition
to postgraduate master’s and doctoral programs, the
School has been for over a decade offering a Juris Doctor
program for graduates from non-law backgrounds. The
School also has several Continuing Education master’s
programs, conducted in evening sessions, for those who
work during the daytime.
The School offers courses in the theory and practice
of domestic (ROC) law and basic courses in Anglo-American
law, for which the teaching materials used are Anglo-American
court case studies, statutory law and law studies. Small
class size and two-way interactions between teacher
and student characterize the method of instruction.
Attention is also paid to the students’ foreign language
skills. Students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular
activities and clubs, like the Law Student Association,
the Legal Service Society, the Propagation Club for
Law, the Legal Debate Team, and the Law Studies Camp,
which provides activities for high school students,
so that legal education be combined with a commitment
to public service.
