The Center supports the required
English Listening and Comprehension course and the elective
Advanced English Listening and Speaking Practice course,
in addition to running the language practice labs and
audio-visual facilities. The combined hardware on both
campuses camprises ten language labs, two self-access
learning labs, one projection room, and two recording
rooms. The self-access learning labs are small audio-visual
libraries for all faculty and students for checking
out audio or video tapes or CDs to practice foreign
languages. They have collections of English, Japanese,
German, French and Spanish multi-media materials. The
self-access learning labs on the Waishuanghsi Campus
has a satellite TV reception system installed that can
receive simultaneous on-line foreign language news,
drama or other shows. In November 2001, the Downtown
Campus also set up a satellite TV connection service
through the Internet, offering multimedia modern and
internationalized foreign language materials.
Beginning with the 2002-2003
academic year, to raise the students interest in learning
foreign languages and provide more space for private
foreign language study, on the one hand, in each semester
separate English, Japanese and German private language
study groups are organized and “Learn how to study a
foreign language by yourself” activities are held, and
on the other, language study guidance counselors are
assigned to weekly come and supervise the students to
help them, solve their problems, give demonstrations
and give suggestions for further improvement in the
language.
