Music
from Soochow
The Music Department of the school
has at present six student performing groups, a symphony
orchestra, a wind orchestra, a strings orchestra, a
choir, a modern chamber music ensemble and a jazz band.
These groups perform regularly every year in the National
Concert Hall and Recital Hall, as well as go on island-wide
performance tours to county and city cultural centers
and those of civic or business organizations. The purpose
is to raise the students’ performing experience and
at the same time promote musical education in the communities.
The Department also actively cooperates with communities
and various enterprises in holding charity concerts
to develop the students’ concern for society and make
them aware of the less fortunate sections there — and
very much hopes that the refined melodies will genuinely
entertain the attending general public, alumni and friends
of the school.
The Arts and Recreation Center
To improve artistic atmosphere
—following the idea of cultivation via environmen —
and to increase cultural interaction, an Arts and Recreation
Center is incorporated in Building Six on the Downtown
Campus.
It includes an art exhibition hall,
a small theater hall for all kinds of performances on
the stage, a faculty lounge, a coffee shop, and art
exhibition preview office with a small specialized arts
library. All these aim at promoting recognition and
appreciation of beauty by the experience of pluralistic
cultural presentations, exhibitions and activities.
After opening of the Arts and Recreation Center, it
has become one of the major venues of artistic activities
in downtown Taipei, where the cultural features of the
school can be displayed for faculty, students and the
communities around to enjoy.
