Introduction

    Social Work was a part of Department of Sociology from 1978 to 1990. In order to enrich the social work professional education, the Department of Social Work was established in 1990. Currently, we have about 500 undergraduate students. Our task is to provide a learning environment for students to be qualified social workers.

 

    The graduate program of social work started in 1992, it had been a field of graduate program of sociology since 1981, and currently we have about 65 graduate students. The goal of this program is to train advanced clinical social workers with diverse perspectives, policy planners, administrators, and social work researchers to perform leadership roles in their fields.

 

   The staff and faculty of the department are involved with practice, community, and social movement; they play the leading roles in social work profession in Taiwan. Moreover, the program is concerned with family work and oppression populations in community, for example, adolescence, women, children, elderly and aboriginals in communities.

Degree Program

The Department of Social Work at Soocihow University provides a rich environment for the education of qualified social workers, offering programs at the undergraduate and master's.  Field education is an integral part of the BSW and MSW programs.  The expected outcomes of the programs are below:

1. The BSW program prepares our graduates as professional social work practitioners by equipping them with fundamental knowledge and ability as social work generalists, reflecting relevant content in regard to respecting cultural diversity and emphasizing localization, and developing action and partnership to carry out the professional social work ethic.

2. The MSW program not only maintains the existing foundation theory courses of upper-level professional clinical social work training, but also tries to implement the policy of the Ministry of Education that each department should develop its own teaching characteristics.

Teaching

Our Department is famous for its strong focus on teaching clinical skills.  We have 17 dedicated full-time faculty members, which is the highest in the nation, and joined by invited experienced clinicians, researchers, experts in counseling, policy developers, and administrators from many settings to provide a comprehensive learning environment for our students.

In accordance with the expected outcome as stated above, the design of the curriculum will be emphasize on a balanced development of direct, indirect social service; we try to make strong connections between theory and practice through the various service activities; we stress on learning by doing and provide experiential educational opportunities directed toward the development of professional identity, self-understanding and competent practice; developing teaching team and using the PBL model for the cultivation of the professionals in the fields.

Arrangement of Courses

1.     Postgraduate Courses: MSW program

(1)   MSW students must study and pass required courses within the length of schooling, regulated by the University Law, and successfully complete 33 credits of courses before applying for the oral examination of MSW dissertation. The MSW degree is conferred only after passing oral examination satisfactorily.

(2)   Courses of the BSW program are divided into two main kinds: common required courses and core optional courses.  The arrangement of the courses is as follows:

2.     Undergraduate Courses: BSW program

(1)   The undergraduate program is a 4-year program.  The required credits needed for graduation are 134.

The faculty¡¦s specialties cover various welfare populations, such as children, the youth, the elderly, women, family, and the disabled.  They are experienced practicing professionals in clinical therapy, community work, mental health, policy administration, research, child welfare, group work, independent practice and counseling.
