In recent years, reuse of space has made a strong impact on the ecology of performing arts in Taiwan. This research is a case study of Huashan Art District, examining the results of the reuse of space in the past 5 years and the ecology of performing arts and the spirit of place in Huashan Art District when transferred to Huashan Creativity Cultural Park. Besides, this research also puts Huashan into social context to observe social force of its formation.

This research tries to use the concept of the spirit of place to analyze the results of Huashan Art District. Using the concept of space is the key to observe “the Wind of Huashan” made by Huashan Art District in recent years and the impacts generated by it. Besides, the framework of this study considers Huashan formed by three forces: first cultural regulation, second cultural creation and third being cultural economy. The relationships of these forces may cause conflicts or cooperate for the same goal. Moreover, this study uses the concept of the social location and symbolic struggle to explain the reason these forces conflict or cooperate.

In conclusion, Huashan Art District is the ideal modal of reuse of space in Taiwan. However the complex problem of property rights and other forces of intervention have made the image and situation of Huashan Art District unique. The result of this study not only examines the policy of the reuse of space, but also the operation of current social structure and the change of relationships in competition and cooperation in the evolution of Huashan Art District.
